Prose Modes & Models

Sudowrite allows you to select from a wide range of Prose Modes and AI models. Doing so effectively changes the AI that is going to be doing the work.

What are Prose Modes?

Prose Modes are purpose-built model suites, featuring a primary AI model and other supporting models to make them more robust and capable. You can use Sudowrite without ever toggling your Prose Mode, but if you’d like to experiment and see how results may differ, you can find the option available in both your Write settings and the Chapter Generator. (It’s not currently possible to select a different Prose Mode for other features.)

Changing the Prose Mode will change the AI models doing the work. In turn, that changes things like the number of credits a feature uses as well as the output.

The Prose Modes currently available include:

  • Most Accurate - Based on GPT-4
  • Balanced - Based on GPT-4 Turbo
  • Unfiltered - Based on Goliath 120B
  • Best Prose (v2) - Based on Claude 3 Opus

Retired, but usable Prose Modes include:

  • Best Prose (v1) - Based on Claude 2.0
  • Fastest - Based on GPT-3.5 Turbo

What are Experimental models?

You may also select from a wide range of specific AI models in both Write settings and the Chapter Generator. These models differ from Prose Modes in that they have not been optimized.

Experimental models currently available include:

  • Goliath 120B
  • Mythomax 13B
  • Mixtral 7B Instruct
  • Mistral 7B Open Orca
  • Mistral OpenHermes 7B
  • Gemini Pro
  • Claude 3 Opus
  • Claude 3 Sonnet
  • Claude 3 Haiku
  • Claude 3.5 Sonnet
  • Mistral Medium

Each AI model has its own approach, voice, and specific strengths. We encourage you to experiment and see which AI best suits your specific writing needs.

So are the Experimental models “raw” models?

Sort of. Keep in mind that Sudowrite has background prompting powering its features, and background functions (such as Saliency Engine) may influence what is ultimately seen by those models. Think of it like this:

Prose Modes = Optimized, Experimental Models = Raw*, Plugins = Raw

The only ways to use a truly “raw” AI model on Sudowrite is to build an Advanced Plugin using that model. Elsewhere we are doing some (or a lot!) of work to make sure things work great.
